Type 2 Diabetes - Three Steps To Help You Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels!

Expert Author Beverleigh H Piepers

Type 2 diabetic sufferers can have a thin line between hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. The reason is that they are unable to process the sugars in their bloodstream efficiently. If this is you... don't fret because you can achieve stable blood sugar levels. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor what your levels should be and when to check them.

Here are three simple steps to help you:

Step 1 - Check Your Blood Glucose Level Regularly:

Use your glucometer to test your sugar levels at the times that you and your doctor agree on. This will help you find the pattern your levels rise and fall with. Your activities, the food you eat and the time of day you test your sugar are going to make a difference. Other issues such as stress, pain, depression, sickness and inability to move, count as well.

Once you have the pattern figured out, it'll be much simpler to customize your diabetes management plan to meet your needs. This means you can make the necessary changes to adjust your blood sugar levels to the ideal range for your body and stabilize them.

Step 2 - Listen To Your Body Signals:

Your body is going to send you signals that it's not feeling right. Be sure you listen to them. Also, be sure you know the symptoms that come with having low or high blood sugar levels. If you take insulin and miss a meal, or even if your body is regaining its insulin sensitivity, you may deal with hypoglycemia. You may experience: shaking, sweating, hunger, anxiety, weakness, rapid heartbeat dizziness, confusion or even have difficulty speaking.

Once you understand the signals and what they mean, you can take action early. When you check your blood sugars and they are below 70 mg/dL (3.9mmol/L) you need to eat something that raises your levels quickly!

Step 3 - Be Aware Of The Unpredictable:

Dangerous hypoglycemia is very unlikely if you are taking no medications, and is also unlikely if you are being treated with only metformin (Glucophage). Nevertheless your blood sugar levels can drop drastically with a powerful diet. Most Type 2 diabetics look at having:

  • an HbA1c level less than 7%
  • pre-meal BSL's between 80 to 120 md/dL (4.4 to 6.7mmol/L)
  • a blood sugar level below 160mg/dL (8.9mmol/L) 1 to 2 hours after you have eaten

Be sure you talk with your friends and family about the steps you'd like to see them take should you pass out at any time. Have your doctor's phone number displayed so they can contact him/her in an emergency.

When you maintain your blood sugar levels with healthy lifestyle habits: a sensible diet, regular exercise, stress management, and sound preventative health care, you reduce your chances for complications and can live a healthy life with Type 2 diabetes.
